On Saturday 27th March, between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. important and popular buildings of Krakow, such as: Wielkopolscy Palace, KoĹ›ciuszko Mound, St. Mary’s Church, the City Hall Tower and Sukiennice (The Cloth Hall), will stand in complete darkness. This is the 4th edition of the international project: “Earth Hour” organized by WWF, and the second one supported by Krakow. The action is aimed at increasing the involvement of all the people in the balanced energy policy and strengthening their sense of responsibility for the future of our planet. Â
The history of this Project goes back to 2007 when the lights in Sydney were switched off for the first time. The next year another 35 countries participated in the event. Famous landmarks all over the world have already been standing in darkness: the Niagara Fall, Alcatraz Prison, Sears Tower in Chicago, Coliseum in Rome, Sydney Opera House or Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Every year, the campaign has an increased number of participants. Â
According to Jacek Majchrowski, the president of Krakow, this action is just a symbol which shows that there are many people in the world who are worried about the climate changes. Everyone can take part in the action – it is enough to register on www.wwf.pl/godzinadlaziemi and switch the light off at 8:30.
